South Haven Area Parks

The South Haven area offers visitors a variety of year-round activities. Spring brings nature walks and bird watching. During Summer months, there is swimming, boating, canoeing, kayaking, hiking, bird-watching, biking, and skateboarding. In the Fall, hunters can enjoy camping and hunting in the designated areas. Winter months offer plenty of snow for cross-country skiing and snowmobiling fun.

    Van Buren State Park offers approximately 400 acres of land located along the Lake Michigan shoreline in northern Van Buren County. The focal points of the park are its high dune formations and one mile of sandy beach. Van Buren became a state park in May of 1965 when the original 167-acre plot was purchased from the Harry LaBar Drake family. Since then two other land purchases have been made to make up the current park.

    Driving Directions:
    From I-96 take Exit 13 W. 1/2 mile, N. on Old Blue Star Hwy. For 4 miles. Left on Cr 380, then left on Ruggles Rd.

    Features:
    Michigan State Park Explorer Program, Hunting, Playground, Lake Michigan Beach (swimming, sunbathing and surf-casting), Picnic Area (Picnic tables and fire pits/grills Picnic Area) two modern toilet buildings, Hiking, and Metal Detecting Areas.

    Alcohol Restrictions:
    Alcohol is prohibited from April 15 through Labor Day in the day-use and beach areas of the park.

    Black River Park

    Black River Park has easy access to Lake Michigan with its public boat launch. The park is also favorite hangout for the "duck feeders" – not a bad way to relax; feed the ducks or have a picnic at the well kept facilities. The park is very close to downtown and has a great view of the Black River. Public restrooms on site. The park closes at 10pm, no unleashed animals, no alcohol, and folks using picnic facilties are expected to clean up after themselves and properly dispose of hot coals.

    Kal-Haven Trail

    Kal-Haven Trail Park is really a scenic bike trail that follows the Black River from South Haven to Kalamazoo (34.5 miles). Access to the trail is controlled by permit. Handicap accessible.

    Directions:
    I-196 exit 20, then west on Phoenix Rd 6/10 mile, then north 1/2 mile on Bailey Ave. Follow signs to trailhead parking.

You can even enjoy a picnic amongst the towering structures and several different kinds of swings. In the summer it is one of the best places to get into the shade. No entrance fees. No unleashed animals.
